We had a weekend away the other week. A total weekend of relax because there was literally nothing to do but chill out in our little cabin with the heater on, watch the sun rise and set. There was no phone reception, no internet connection, nothing. It was that little break in the woods, in the bush, surrounded by nothing but trees, dirt road, birds chirping and isolated fresh air that you only seem to get in the country.
It was one of those weekends where everyone had an early night, asleep and head to pillow before we could say boo. Curled up on the couch for a brief moment with nothing but us, a different scenario just there. Usually there is an iPad or computer or phone between us and distracting us while we have that very crappy television show. This night there was none of that, just us.
Watching the recap of master chef was in actual fact a luxury.
And as we enjoyed a little get away of total serenity and blissful country air, I realised how important it is to switch off. It is hard, often something that I find the most challenging at ten pm at night. My mind is racing.
But by switching off, having no cyber world connection, the blissful cockatoos are a joy to listen to, appreciate and acknowledge . And the freezing cold morning chill is as refreshing as a nice winter soup.
It is so easy to get sucked into the everyday normality of internet and cyber world. It is not so easy to switch off. But by switching off, turning off and having no distractions, the world around you some how becomes a little more beautiful.
Maybe eyes are opened wider, maybe they are open?
Maybe the small things just don’t matter because that relax holiday mode has set in?
Or maybe it is your soul and body telling you a little break away from life is just what you need.
Moments are captured and noticed in a new light, new way and new perspective.
Switching off, turning the world off is exactly what this little family needed; exactly.
