how passions and interests increase motivation and direction for teenagers

If adolescents know where their interests and passions lie, new ideas and sources of motivation can emerge.

I am digging up some old articles I wrote for yourkidsed and stumbled across this one. I changed it up a little and thought it was time to share here at the parenting files

**********

How often have you asked a teenager what they are interested in and the response is a shrug of the shoulders and “yuummmm I don’t know”?

When you are passionate and interested in something you get a buzz, excitement, it captures your attention and you want to invest time and energy into it.

Soccor, sports, ballet, art classes….

It is important for adolescents to have an idea of what their interests are in order to guide them toward their pathway and direction. Knowing what they like and dislike encourages them to pursue choices that are complementary to their strengths and passions.

There is emotion, it comes from the heart and inspires us to all lead a life in pursuit of this strong desire

Leading a passionate life that is also guided by our interests not only motivates us in pathway direction, but equally, motivates positive energy, confidence and aspiration.

So here are my tips and questions to help your teen get from the “I don’t know phase” to knowing phase…

–       How do you enjoy spending your free time?

–       If you had 1 hour a day to do anything you wanted, what would it be?

–       If you were really wealthy and money did not matter, what would you do?

–       What sort of person do you want people to know you as?

Maybe these are questions for your teen, maybe they are questions for you…

Leading a life driven by passions and interests gives a sense of meaning and direction.

Teens may need a little extra encouragement to explore the things that really matter to them, that give them that buzz, drive and will power.

A sense of purpose is something we all strive for and have a need to feel.

A sense of knowing who they are, what is important to them and what they want to stand for.

Who are You? can be one of the most challenging, yet scary but enlightening source of knowledge for all.

A little more motivation

What gives you that buzz and excitement? What does being passionate about something mean to you?

    Hi Tahlia,

I think this is a lovely and simple way for parents to connect and help guide or mentor their teens.

From what I see of my friends with teens, often when they are met with disinterest or attitude, they choose the path of least resistance and disengage.

It is important I feel for parents not to disengage and show that one of their passions or buzz things is to show interest in their teenager.

    Good luck with the blogging!
