The Road Not Taken

fork in the road

There are many experiences in life we pass up or miss, because of the choices we make. Every choice we make in life has a consequence, both positive and negative. And with every choice we make, new possibilities emerge and evolve – from the degree you study at university, to the person you marry, the friendships you form and the people you meet. Choices.

But we can’t choose everything. We can’t walk every path. We have to make a choice.

Cliche? Maybe. Truth? Maybe.

Choices will forever be a part of our life.

While reading a lot lately about who inspire me, and, what inspires me, I feel a natural lean toward poetry. I don’t know if it is the cliches being told, or the metaphors written, but there is something inspirational. And so I share with you this poem: The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. Maybe you can’t always choose both paths, but sometimes you can get close enough that you feel that you have made the best choices for you, in that moment, that time, that second.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

What do choices mean to you? Have you chosen a path over a different one?

Beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing. I’ve heard that quote – I took the one less traveled by – but not the entire poem.

One of my favourite poems. My life is a series of sliding door moments where I took one path and forever wonder what would have happened with the other option, knowing it has been a series of chain reactions set off that make it impossible to unravel it all … One choice led to a lifetime…

Those sliding door moments always come by. I guess there is always uncertainty in not knowing ‘what if’ . But we have to keep moving forward with the choices made. thanks deb x

I love this poem. Sometimes I think we forget how blessed we are to be able to MAKE choices. So many people in the world don’t have a lot of choice. But here in Australia the world is our oyster so to speak. We can choose who to marry, what to study, what career to go after and etc. I have made choices in jobs where I made a head decision rather than a heart decision. I feel confident in knowing that the choices I have made have been good ones and I try not to think about the ‘what if’.

so true!!!! so true!!! Just to have a choice is such a privilege. I guess I didn’t think about it that way so thankyou for inspiring me with this absolute truth xx

I love this poem. It’s been a while since I last read it so thank you for bringing it up again. There are many choices in life I’ve made, and although some have been really bad, I think I’m safe to say I’ve not regretted any. All mistakes, all the good choices, have made me who I am today.

That is my all time favourite poem. I studied it for English in year 8 and have kept a copy of it close by ever since. It speaks to me in a way few poetry ever has. I often think about what life would be like had I made different decisions at different times in my life and I have to say that I am thankful for each of the decisions I’ve made as my life would be nowhere near as good if I had chosen differently.

Speaking to people who have divorced, I’ve asked them before do you sometimes wish that you’d never gotten married in the first place, and for those with kids the answer is always no because if they had made a different choice then they wouldn’t have the beautiful children they have now and I totally get that.

I don’t believe in regretting the choices we make because I believe they shape us and make us who we are, good or bad.

So true kylie. So true! Even with the heartache and emotion of divorce I too can see the no regrets situation. Coming from a divorced family I honestly believe that my mother never had any regrets with who she married, because similarly she would never had my brother and I, but her anger is still there. She often talks about those ‘what if’ situations but I think in a different way.

How amazing you studied it in year 8, you remembered it, and has stuck with you ever since… xx

This is such a beautiful poem. I find myself facing crossroads all the time and as much as I would love to see down each path before I choose I know that whichever way I choose it will never be a dead end, just another part of the journey, for good or bad, and will make me who I am.

There is always a new road waiting for us, it is just what we make of it. I always try to go with my gut when choosing a path. It is a beautiful poem about life and its at times confusing journey. Taking the road less traveled is an exciting prospect.
    Thanks for sharing this inspiration!

I’ve made a few dodgy choices in my life time, particularly in regards to men, but they must have been the right ones because I am now with my prince charming!

Without those dodgy choices Emily you wouldn’t be where you are today! Ditto hear too! xx

  • bodyandfeetretreat

I beleive that all the choices I have made in the past – good and bad – have made me the person I am today and if I had made different choices I would have landed up being somewhere / someone different to where/who I am today.
I try to find the positives in the choices I make – sometimes it isn’t that easy but at the end of the day I believe that we are where we are meant to be.
    Have the best day !

I always think that if I had taken a different path, I wouldn’t be who I am, I wouldn’t have married my husband or had my son. I’m glad I made the choices I did and even though some were the wrong ones, I’ve learnt from them.

I honestly believe that the wrong decisions are sometimes the best decisions…. xx

Choices mean angst to me. I make a choice quickly and then agonise over whether I did the right thing thereafter. But I’ve always known that no choice is final. Nothing is done that can’t be undone in some way and that’s all part of the road. x
