surviving the coughs, colds, fevers and miserable feelings

a spoonful of sugar

my daughter was sick yesterday… really sick. What started out as a casual mothers group play date, ended with a day (and night) that never ended….thus the reasons for my absence yesterday. Cough, cold, running nose that is constantly dripping like a tap, and high fever that dose not seem to break. And then the awful, painful and heartbreaking sleepless night where my husband ended up sleeping on the floor in her room to reassure her he was still there.

The night that didn’t seem to end went into the next day and now I hear… silence and peace. The poor little puppet who is just so helpless, miserable, sad and unhappy.

Isn’t it amazing how one can function on only a few hours sleep. We survived! The fever broke, and I think we are on the mend, thank goodness. So I wonder what the survival tips are for these awful and dreaded sicknesses. I thought I would compile mine:

1. appreciate the cuddles you get – for the first time EVER, my little baby feel asleep in my arms today. Snuggled up with her finger in her mother, she just could not get enough of her mummy cuddles. Ohh how I crave these on so many other days as she just never sits still long enough for me to get my hands around her.

2. all the rules are out the window and ‘whatever works’ is in – our baby has never shared our bed but last night she did (before it turned into a game for her and she was kicked out).

3. Stock up on nurofen and panadol – so the trip to the midnight pharmacy is hopefully avoided

4. have that spare pillow and blanket – be prepared for that sleepover

5. try and squeeze in a cup of coffee or tea (with lemon), or for those real hard moments, a scotch for the boys and a glass of red for the girls

And now over to you… what are your survival tips for surviving your children’s coughs, colds and fevers?
