The big bash

big bash cricket

There are a few things I remember distinctly in my childhood. One of them were the cricket memories shared between my brother and I. I’ll be honest, I was never a huge cricket fan; but my brother was. He played it, he watched it, he breathed it, he followed it. However, every now and then I got into the spirit of things when it came to the cricket.

Maybe it was my age, the era, or the simple time of cricket, but it was back in the day of Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Michael Bevan that were my days of cricket. Surprisingly, I think I knew the majority of the Australian players back then. They were the days I used to love going to the cricket, watching the cricket and being a part of the game.

And there is one cricket moment that stands out the most: Michael Bevan’s incredible four off the last ball of the match to seal the win against Australia and West Indies back in 1995. Everyone was on their seats. Their were ‘oooooo’s’ and ‘ahhhh’s’ heard throughout the whole stadium in that last over. Glued to the seats, noone imagined that he could actually do it. But he did. Yes, that was a moment I remember.

The cricket has never disappeared, however, my appreciation is beginning to immerse again. Being a mother of a lively, energetic and often quite adventurous young boy, I am always discovering and finding new ways to unleash his inner competitive streak. Sport is one avenue.

Monday night’s T20 Big Bash between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers the stadium was bustling with young kids, families and alright good family fun. There was even acrobatics there on field entertaining…. ha! Thank goodness they didn’t get bowled over by a four. It was an environment packed with laughter, smile, exhilaration, ooooh’s and ahhhhhh’s. It was just down right good fun on a field celebrating what Australians love the most; sport.

And I was taken back to that match in 1995 when Michael Bevan scored that winning shot with  the nail biting over. The Stars needed 16 runs off 6 balls to win. Eleven off four. There was tension. Everyone was on their seats. And then….. a boundary to win the game. It was a draw. And then the Super Over. The Stars achieved an extraordinary 20 runs….

The Stars won!
