toilet training antics

toddler toilet training

We are in that stage where we are kind of toilet training, but not really. What I mean is, it is that back-and-forth antic between thinking he is ready and then realising he is not quite ready. He will be three in April. My daughter was done at about 26 months. The little man on the other hand is something quite different; very different.

I may be biased, but I often wonder where he gets his quirk, smartypant antics, inquisitive nature and solid intelligent genes {ha! I like to think some of it comes from me}. And I think, he must be ready because in everything else he is just flying with leaps and bounds. WRONG! The thing I have learnt about toilet training is that there is no rational or relationship to any other factor or characteristic going on. It is this independent element of toddlerhood that can not be bucketed with anything else. He scoots like a five year old, talks with incredible clarity, struts his musical talent alongside The Wiggles… but toilet training, Ha!

He is comfortable sitting on the potty, then the toilet. He tells me he doesn’t want a nappy, but then three minutes later he does want one. He wants to be a big boy with undies like his sister, but then changes his mind again… AHHH..It is constant mind changing.

I have heard about the 3-day-toilet training guide for kids and I think… does it really happen? Can it happen? Should I give it a shot? More questions loom…

My grandmother told me many moons ago that “by the time they are twenty they are out of nappies, eat what they want, sleep when they want, don’t care if they were bottle feed or breast feed and certainly have no recollection if they were toilet trained at two and half instead of three and a half.” So I kind of feel I have to follow this wisdom and just wait…

Wait till he tells me he is done.

Wait till he consistently wants to sit on the toilet.

Wait till he struggles putting a nappy on.

Just wait.

In the meantime I am just still going back and forth with him encouraging him to sit on the potty when he wants, walk around but naked when he wants, and let him tell me what he wants. I figure that can’t hurt.

Are you in the midst of toilet training? Been there done that…. tips?
