We are finally at the stage of baby food making and baby eating lots, and lots of food. Yes, the little man is loving his food! First it was the rice cereal, then a little pear, then a little pumpkin. And now the menu list just continues and continues. Keeping up with his daily demands is now the challenge.
But I still remember a few tricks and cheats to make my life, and my family’s a little easier:
1. Prepare in bulk: preparing just enough for one meal does not work for us. Honestly, I don’t have time. So I prepare enough food that will last for at least five meals, and hopefully more. When I make pureed apple, I make a whole big bowl. I just have to make sure no one else eats it from the fridge…
2. Divide and freeze portions: This was something I picked up somewhere in my journey. Ice cube trays are the best baby food freezing solutions.
3. Use silicon ice cube trays: They just make popping out the cubes much easier. I use the Ikea silicon ice cube trays as I find them the cheapest and easiest. With different shape options as well, this can make sorting food easier in the freezer too.
4. Prepare each vegetable on it’s own as well as in combination: This way you can then just make up your own combination of food each meal. Simple go to the freezer, and choose your cube options. A little bit of broccoli, potato, carrot. And then add a little chicken if you want.
5. Plan ahead: Planning is the key. The worst thing is to be left last minute without any options. And all those soft looking pears or apples… just cook away and then freeze. Save on food going off, and preparing for later too. But on the occasion that the planning did not go to plan (which let’s be honest, will happen), then you can always chop up a carrot, put it in a bowl with a little water and lid and steam in the microwave.
6. Don’t stress: Reality is that we just sometimes need to go the pre-made jars and tubs. This is totally fine. My daughter still loves her “slushy” as we call it. These days, there are so many wonderful options, even organic, to just make our life easier. And sometimes this is more important then the fresh apple from home.
7. Get your hands on an Avent combined steamer and blender: Phillips have come up with another fabulous product to make our lives easier. And this design is genius! You steam, and blend! Yes, you hear right. A combo device.
So what does this mean. Quicker preparation, less mucking around with more utensils and machines. AND, less cleaning up. This machine is wonderful. All you do is prepare your veges, pop them into the cup, hit steam, then flip the cup, and blend. That simple!
Broccoli and potato mash:
10 broccoli florets
1 potato, cut into pieces
– Fill the steamer to the 200ml maximum
– Steam for 10 minutes
– Add a little liquid if you wish.
– Flip jar, blend for 30 seconds, or until desired consistency.
Simple!
Sometime life is about simplifying the chaos, and minimising the chaos. Sometimes life is about simple broccoli and potato mash, all made in one.
