Straight out I am going to admit that I think there is something fundamentally wrong with these toddler beauty pageants. To see an innocent six year old, dance those provocative moves (although doing it innocently and ignorantly) on a stage and forum, dressed up to be this unnatural beauty with a mask and facade that hides her gorgeous complexion and features… to me is something a little scary.
When did it become ok for us to glorify unnatural beauty, masks, actions and costumes? When did it become ok to say you must put on this unnatural act to be seen as beautiful and stand out from the crowd? How is putting on such a costume in the name of beauty giving our children the message that you are beautiful just the way you are, and you don’t need all the facades, glossy hair and makeup to feel beautiful and be seen as beautiful? It is giving children a completely different message.
Watching the interview on Today Tonight with Eden Wood’s mother (Eden is the face of Toddlers and Tiaras for those who are not yet aware of who this face is), I can not help wonder what she is trying to fight for. Is she fighting to prove that she is not a bad parent, or is she trying to fight for her daughter’s “dream” and ambition to do what she wants to do? Or is she feeling this overriding sensation to stand by her daughter because maybe no one stood by her and her choices while growing up?

On the upside, I acknowledge the skill and training and coaching needed for these competitions. Like any sport, children need coaching to refine their skills and build the confidence to compete in the next competition. And yes, not every young girl would have the confidence to stand on stage and do what they need to do, perform, dance and sing in front of a huge audience… this does take a certain character…. but please tell me… why the whole fake, unnatural facade to accompany this. Maybe scrape the ‘beauty’ in front of the pageant…
Maybe at the end of the day it is about how far one takes these competitions… how fun is it for everyone, children and parents? Is it just a little bit of make-believe with lots of fun, or is it a serious be-all-and-end-all competition.
