5 creative craft ideas

20130226-143315.jpg

The day my daughter turned two was the day her imagination & creativity began to shine. Maybe there were glimpses of this trait within her earlier, & I am pretty sure there was, but it was from the two-year old stage onward that I noticed more. She would take herself off to draw, go to the arts-and-crafts cupboard, be wanting to do play dough more often, use garden treasures in her artworks, & be the little artist she is. Yes, my little artiest began to shine.

I can’t blame her really, I have always had an arty flair. I did art classes from 5 years of age, and always had a love for painting. Still do. My house is filled with my own designs and creations. So my Little E naturally inherited this… well I like to think so anyway.

So this year, 2013, I have made a goal for myself and my little girl to do more arts and crafts.

:: Create more.

:: Paint more.

:: Use our imagination more.

The restocking of the cupboard has begun & I am always on the lookout for what can be used in her next masterpiece.

1. Don’t throw away your cardboard boxes. If making a car is not your thing, cut it up into pieces. Cardboard is great for hand painting, foot painting & outdoor painting.

2. Toilet roll holders, glad wrap tubes, cereal boxes can be turned into just about anything. With a little sticky tape, glue and paint, you could have a dinosaur living in your house soon enough.

3. Those foam fillers that come in delivered boxes that sometimes you wonder is filling the box more then your purchased goods… another great crafting item.

4. If you are stuck on ideas, just go outside. There is a world of crafting items, tools and imagination waiting for you. A stick can even be used as a painting tool, while the leaves can be then stuck down.

5. Think like a child. They don’t care what they use, as their imagination is forever growing and evolving.

And if all else fails to find bits and boobs, things are made even easier with pre-packaged packs and accessories from Riot. Yes, Riot have recently helped me on my journey. And I could not be happier!

Who knew a crocodile was so easy to make? I admit, Mister Maker is a favourite at our house and I am forever inspired by his 1 minute creations. Have I ever tried? Your joking! But our crocodile from Riot was a success. Not in 1 minute, but not too long after.

And we played together, we created to together, we helped each other along. There is something about those googly eyes!

Riot have made it super easy for families and mums like me to get into the creating arts and crafts era of play with their packs that includes everything… even glue! They are fantastic.

    My toddler loves things that make noise! I keep all my plastic bottles and fill them with a hand full of rice or pasta. I glue the lids shut and they make an excellent shaker.
    Different things make different noises so it’s fun to experiment with different dried products.

    I need to do more craft with Ava. She loves it so much.
    I’ve always found one of the easiest things, was just cutting up the catalogues and gluing them onto paper. It’s amazing how excited they get about finding things like ‘vegemite’ to paste on :)

    My best crafting idea is going to the shops to purchase craft items for my 3 year old. That’s about as far as I go… I’m great at craft as long as I have instructions and a goal. My imagination is definitely lacking!

    Mine love making huts with sheets and their new favourite is designing a boat with cushions and pretending there are sharks. My nearly 5 year old loves watching Mister Maker and then making up her own version! Great post x

    It’s so true that kids play with anything. How many kids I have seen playing with the package rather than playing with the actual gift.

    Once we went outside and found feather and leaves and pasted those on paper. I just make flour and water glue. I have a box that I chuck stuff in for pasting, like bottle tops, pop sticks, old cards and wrapping paper offcuts. Occasionally I will get craft packs to top it up from the cheap shop.

    This week in my classroom we did crayon etchings. You shade a whole piece of paper with a rainbow array of crayons. Over the tops you paint the page with black paint. While still wet you etch a picture into the black paint with a paddle pop stick. The rainbow colours are exposed to create the picture. It looks great.

    I collect big boxes and keep them in the garage, and have packing tape at all times. When things get nuts with my toddler we can build things in minutes that she will play with for a good wile after – no mess and we can take them apart easily and restore the boxes all ready for another day :)

    We are firm believers of not throwing away cardboard, we have made lots of fun things, but my fav was the car, caravan, bus and people that my girls made out of two thin card board boxes and some toilet rolls! They had so much fun cutting and painting and decorating!

  • Michelle V

    We love crafts! We usually do themed crafts, for example bunny masks and Easter baskets at Easter, wreaths at Christmas, and love heart decorations at Valentines (great for teachers, and the girls always make one for daddy’s lunch box!) The choices are endless, as there always seems to be some event to celebrate.

    I had a “useful box” when I was a kid (idea from Play School probably) and used to love craft. I had one for my eldest two and must do it again for the toddler :)

  • Jessica

    My nieces and i love to do anything creative!
    Our favourite thing lately is to find items around the house, dip them in paint and see what we can do with it.
    A large roll of paper makes a great base for your own city. We have created roads by rolling toy car wheels in paint and driving them along the paper. Blocks dipped in paint make great buildings, can even draw on some windows. We have a few 3D buildings made from various boxes covered in wrapping paper. Some blue glitter poured on glue makes a beautiful sparkling river with leaf boats. Grass and flowers are great for bushes. Ideas are endless. Feel sorry for the poor people of the town though as they regularly get attacked by dinosaurs, giant babies and anything else that can be painted lol. Old vegetables such as carrots and potatoes that will be thrown out also make great stamps for decorating if you cut them into a shape :)

  • Jessie Hay

    I save little things from around the house that I think would be great for collage in a box and let my little boys create with them- it’s amazing what their imaginations can come up with :)

    We have two mice pets, so making a new home for them is always fun!
