everyday moments : homour

It was one of those evenings that was planned weeks ago. The one where you plan to go for dinner with friends, catch up, reminisce and then come home to curl into bed with each other. The one where you have been looking forward to those evening cuddles, closeness and dare I say it, sex, which seems to have dwindled of late. Yes, we were looking forward to that evening.

But the thing about those evenings that seem to be mildly planned and thought out somehow go pear shaped. Dinner and company was lovely; the atmosphere horrible. Dessert temptations turned into leaving the restaurant early as the calculation of time and dropping the babysitter back home made us realise that the night would then drag on even later. And we had planned a lovely evening post dinner remember.

And then it started. “Mumma, Mumma, Mumma”. And it continued. And then there were cries. And then there was the resettling of the baby. And then there was a pause. And then it started again.

And then the gastro outbreak happened. And it happened. Just like that. It didn’t stop. Those cuddles together turned into snuggles with the little miss. The poor little thing.

One load of sheets changed; and then another. And in all the pain, tiredness, sorrowful helpless feeling, I can’t help but see the homour to this situation that no parent likes to experience. Because in parenting, it is the funny side of life that sometimes gets you buy. The humour that allows us to pinch ourselves and realise the joys in some of the most horrid situations.

Humour. The funny side of life’s little challenges.
