how to take critique in your stride

Yesterday I got critiqued. Well, it wasn’t me personally…. it was my blog.

You see, I went to a blogging training day to learn all things blogging.

I happened to stumble upon a tweet by a blogger guru asking fellow training day participants to send in their blog for the critque workshop.

I did. I didn’t think much of it.

It was about 3pm yesterday. I really needed to go to the bathroom and grab one the cool free coconut drinks and just have a break. But some how I stumbled back into the workshop.

And there it was. My blog on the overhead screen being critiqued.

Instinctively I shy away. But then I thought, hold on…. this is a phenomenal opportunity! An opportunity the 249 other participants would have loved. I would be utterly stupid to continue to shy away and not listen intently to what he had to say.

Lucky for me, the photo on the latest post was a good one! A real personal one too… must have been good luck. Funny enough… it was a post on thankfulness… hmmmm…. (sit and contemplate that coincidence)

All in all the comments were good. But I got some incredible constructive feedback to change.

Criticism is not always criticism. Criticism is sometimes positive feedback.

It is how you perceive it.

What you take from it.

What you want to listen to.

So I am grateful for this positive feedback. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity. I am grateful that I heard it as positive feedback and not criticism.

What positive feedback have you been given that you are grateful for?

Linking up with Maxabella for all things thankful

I agree that this would have been very scary! But such a wonderful opportunity at the same time. I hope you got to learn something new about yourself and your blog, Tahlia. I reckon most “criticism” is done in good spirit and meant for the best.

Hope you got a lot out of the workshop too! x

thanks maxabella…. that is the difference between criticism and positive feedback isn’t it :) thanks for having me in your linky up post xx

Overall, I think he gave you mostly positive feedback, & anything critical was only technical stuff which is easily fixed :)

A fabulous opportunity, & honestly, I felt very proud for you!

Was also lovely to meet you :)

    xx

I think you were very brave to put your hand up…. but you are right, it was a killer opportunity! Chris Garrett really knows his stuff.

Some of his points I think were spot on, others I think might need considering since yours is a more personal style of blog… rather than business etc. I think one of the smartest things he said was to figure out your priorities and goals, then use that to drive how you put your blog together.
I learnt loads from hearing your blog critiqued, so thanks!

Thanks Kate. I think blogs that are “selling” are a little different to the personal ones. Although I am not selling anything persae, I guess it is still part of my business so I have to think about all his points. Especially thinking about my goals and where i want to take my blog.. this was such a great point.

It was so lovely to meet you and i hope to see you again soon :) xx

That would have been terribly scary, but as you say an amazing opportunity. It is hard to take criticism especially with something so personal as your own blog, but it is from this that we are able to learn and grow.
Hope you enjoyed the day. Hopefully I will be there next year :)

Thanks Jodi. It was a great day with so much learning and growing. Sometimes the scary things are the very best things to learn from :)

Nee say, it was initially nerve wracking, but then I settled down :)

What a great opportunity! Being open to a critique like that from an expert is probably one of the fastest ways to improve.
