making memories last: how to start your own family traditions

family picnic

Whether it is having regular coffee dates with your mum, or going to the park with the kids on a Sunday, or having family meal time every night, family traditions are all around you. What may seem like your everyday routine, or casual Sunday, can be your family tradition right then and there.

Because creating family traditions does not have to be hard; it should not be complicated. But rather, simple, easy and natural. It is a way for everyone to come together, to bond, to share and to ultimately, create memories. But if you are stuck on ideas of how to create a new tradition, be sure to keep these ideas in mind:

Keep your options open

Whether you’re looking for a restaurant or cafe for your family to go to every weekend, or trying to select an activity to do on a weeknight, remember that you should try and cater for everyone’s preferences. Try not to pick out a restaurant that serves sashimi if half of your family can’t stand the taste of fish; and avoid taking your daughter to that muddy field your son insists on playing soccer at. Instead, find options that suit everyone: go to a cafe with a range of meat options, salads, and drinks, or choose an outdoor activity that everyone can get something out of (such as going to the local park or swimming pool).

Traditions don’t have to be extravagant or costly
You don’t have to spend hundreds on a family meal, or drive for hours just to establish family traditions. The little things also count, and sometimes it’s the simple things your family does together that helps to establish a feeling of connectedness. Perhaps your family loves tea, so set aside a weeknight to sit down and have a cup of tea together; if your family loves watching movies, then have movie night each week and work out who will choose the movie each week. It’s these little things that make you look forward to coming home, and give your family more moments to bond and grow together.

Traditions can change
Your family will grow, change and adapt, and your traditions should grow and change as well. While traditions are great and can help you with a feeling of comfort, it’s vital to remember that the most important thing about family traditions is that they let you spend more time with your family – and in the end, that’s what really matters! Don’t be afraid to try something new or break out of your family’s comfort zone. After all, in doing so, you never know what you may discover…your next family tradition, perhaps?

I do love my family, I do love my family tradition. Preference of individual family member is a crucial matter during family trip. I am little bit lucky in this regard. We all the family members used to go to the beach & enjoy ourselves.

Thanks a million for such a good topic :-)
