I know so many mums who constantly tell me, “my child has asthma.” At first, before I was a mum, I really had no idea what this meant. Okay, yes, I had heard of asthma, but having never experienced asthma had always left me in a little bubble of oblivion of the significance of such a statement.  And now, as a mummy, I realise how scary, and troublesome such a diagnosis, and statement, can be for a child and a family.

And so often, I hear and see mums bringing their ventalin for their child. There is always one in the car, and there is certainly always one in mum’s handbag. It is generally one of those necessities that mum’s just carry around. “I always have one in my bag and the car.”

And then I hear of one such story from some friend’s of when they had to rush their five-year-old to hospital because he had an ‘asthma attack’. And as I contemplate how scary this experience must have been, I also ignorantly sit and wonder alone, ‘what is an asthma attack’?

But now, I am not so lost in my bubble. Now I have a much clearly perspective of what this scary asthma attack can be. I now know what asthma really is. And it scares me to think what I would do if I was ever in such a scary situation with my little munchkins.

And as always, I learn, and keep on learning. And have learnt that an attack is when the airways get even more blocked and inflamed and produce more mucus, making it exceedingly difficult for someone to breath. And I have learnt how our Melbourne pollin and air can cause allergies, ultimately impacting on someone’s asthma.

And I realise how lucky I am.

And how scared some mums and dads would feel, maybe too often, because their child is having trouble breathing.

But what I have also learnt is that there is not much anyone can do to prevent asthma. It is just one of those things. However, reducing contact to secondhand smoke, keeping your child away from a fireplace, and being mindful and aware of the air pollution, are just a few of the ways to reduce the severity of a child’s asthma.

And now, with iphone and androids and the many apps you can download and play, there is now an even better way to monitor, and keep track of your child’s asthma symptoms. AsthmaSense is here to help mums. It can even be your personal reminder too.
