If you follow me over on Instagram, you would have seen my beautiful Edi dressed as the Rainbow Fish for book week. She had a fabulous day and the costume lasted the whole day! Bonus!

It literally took one Sunday morning to make, and was SUPER EASY! I even had assistance from young E who was super excited to get involved. You can be really creative with this costume in terms of colour and ‘rainbow’. We, however, decided to stick to a ‘blue rainbow fish’ and colour coordinated everything around it.

What you need:

  • A dress or long t-shirt – I found one for $10 at Kmart. And it just so happened to be the perfect colour combination
  • Assortment of material – I got a little ‘pack’ of blue colours from Spotlight for $24. I then got half a metre of a sparkle material. Again, you could be totally creative with this colour too and what ‘pop’ of sparkle you want to add.
  • Felt glue
  • Craft scissors – make sure they are designed to cut material otherwise it is just way too hard.
  • A piece of Card for the scale stencil
  • An iron

Steps:

1. Once you have decided on the colours you want to use, make a scale shape onto a piece of card and cut out

2. Line the scale stencil along the material and cut out. Miss E helped me by stencilling and drawing around the edges of the stencil onto the material. Continue the stencil step for all the colours.

3. Cut the material to the scale shapes.

4. Once you think you have enough scale pieces, iron them out to make sure they are really flat. Often if the material comes folded, like mine did, there are pre-existing folds that you don’t want.

5. Put your dress/t-shirt flat on a table and start to randomly position the scales along the bottom. Start at the bottom and begin to glue the scales, allowing a little overlap on the top to create that ‘scale’ look.

6. Continue up the dress for the next line, again continuing a little overlap. Try and have each scale between the two scales below. Miss E helped by choosing what colours went where. She really did get involved.

7. Miss E didn’t want the scales to go to the very top, but continue going up as far as you wish.

There you have it. The perfect, most easy and simple book week costume.

Did your kids get into book week? What did you create?
