taking the pain out of health insurance

There are so many elements that need to be considered when organising your families health. I have spoken many times about the importance of physical, emotional and spiritual health. So there is no wonder that health for my family is up there on the priority list.

We have had our fair share of hospital visits this year. Our fair share of medical expenses, doctor’s fees, and those extra appointments we did not plan on. And it wasn’t too long ago we had to think as a family, ‘what sort of health insurance do we need’? Because it wasn’t too long ago that we had to start thinking of our imminent family that would soon come.

For me, there was no mistaking the need to have a cover that would not short change my family. I needed to know that in the most unlikely situations, I didn’t have to think or worry ‘Am I covered?’

Fortunately, there are now wonderful websites that offer comprehensive comparisons between different health insurers. Choosing health insurance is now much easier then it ever used to be.

General dental?

Natural therapies?

Physiotherapy?

Basic hospital cover?

Hospital services include….

The list goes on and on with what sort of options are out there and what extras are covered, and what is not. Sometimes it can get awfully confusing, especially when you don’t know what you think you may need now, and in the future.

So what are my tips on choosing health insurance?

1. Don’t think too far in advance of what you may need. You will go crazy. Set yourself a five year time frame. Are you planning on having children? If so, you may need to think about how this is covered. Remember, there is usually a twelve month waiting period for obstetrics.

2. What extras do you use now? Because if you are not into ‘natural therapies’ now, things may very well not change in the near future.

3. Look into ways to reduce your premium. Paying an excess on hospital admission is one way.

4. Don’t be scared to look around and compare the best deals. And what better way to do so then using Choosi. It is the one stop shop to help you compare, select and save.

Thankfully, things are much easier now. Because choosing health insurance does not have to be so complicated.

Just remember, finding the best insurance for you is about assessing what you and your family need and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Great tips! For us we buy our various insurance plans from one agent. Best to work with someone you can trust and recommend something that suits your needs ather than hopping between different companies and agents. Saves a lot of hassle.

I hate having to pay out health insurance each month. I’ve rarely used it and the ‘extras’ don’t include the things i need … podiatry for example. Still it’s one of those evil necessities that i’d feel naked without.

Totally get what you mean. Sometimes they just don’t include everything you want. Which is why I guess it is important to look into what different insurers cover. And maybe ask specific practitioners if they are covered with the health insurance you are thinking of.

For example, I only have provider numbers with a few insurers. Not everyone.

I make sure I use everything owing to me with private health. Each year, if we get our dentistry, eyes and chiro sorted, it pays for itself :)

We have just started looking in to health insurance. I agree with @bachelormum it’s something that we don’t all need, but if we didn’t have it and something went wrong, well then i think we would all have problems.

Just remember to compare what is around. And yes, you don’t want to be in a situation where you are stuck x

I love health insurance. Without it, my recent dentist visits and physio appointments would have been a lot more expensive!

Health insurance. That old chestnut! I haven’t gone there, except ambulance cover. Where we live, public hospitals are on par and sometimes better than private. Also when I calculated what I would spend a year on health insurance, we could pay for one significant dental treatment or something major per year. And as my husband’s a massage therapist…it hasn’t so far made sense. I looked into it extensively when my daughter needed a tooth operation, but there was no advantage of having health cover. It was cheaper for us to pay it out right.
Anyway, things might change! I will bear your tips in mind when they do. x

It’s a good thing if you can afford it.
