What you thought you would never do as a parent

what you thought you would never do

I am a member if a fabulous “mamma village” Facebook group. It is the kind of group that anyone can ask anything; from tantrum toddlers, to holiday tips to poo questions, to toilet training antics. Yes, anything goes.

It was just the other day that someone asked, “Is there anything you have found yourself doing with your kids that you swore you would never do as a parent”. Ha! Of course, there is something everyone has done that they thought they wouldn’t. This week, I thought I would never toilet train my child with a potty – just go straight to the toilet. Yep, that failed. I was there tipped wee and poo into the toilet.

AND, you would have seen us all dance, scream, play songs, read books inside and outside of the toilet to encourage the little man on the toilet.

There were some ripper comments about what others thought they wouldn’t do. Some of my highlights from other Mummas include:

1. Let them walk around with a snotty nose! After cleaning it 5000 times in a row I get over it & let it hang a while longer!

2. Saying word for word some of the things mum said to us… Caught myself saying to my 5yo ‘if you behave like a baby I will treat you like a baby’.

3.  Compromise our connection by checking Facebook while breastfeeding.

4. I always thought I would never get tired of playing imaginary games with my children..

5. Being ‘that mum’ who always talks about her kid and shows pics off to anyone who’ll look in the direction of my phone.

6. Leave the house looking like a hobo with messy hair and food on my clothes.

7. Promising my dd chocolate for breakfast if she stayed in bed all night! It worked 200% better than stickers!!!

Yep, I can totally relate. I have to admit, the chocolate idea does sound like a good one. But then again, I say today I would “never” do that, yet you may see me temp this if I need that extra sleep in past 6am.

So, spill.. what have you thought you would never do as a parent but found yourself doing….

Yep, I remember the Facebook checking was actually the one time to be able to go into the social media world to snoop on all the gossip happening while I was induced in new-born baby land.!

I thought I would never put my baby in a sleeping bag jacket, nor pin the dummy onto it. Both ill-advised according to those trying to prevent SIDS. But after getting up 9 times one night because the baby was cold and/or had lost her dummy I did both. We never slept so well!!! And she is fine at 17yo. Her getting to sleep issues are her own to bear now.

I did many things that were not “approved”. One in particular was putting my 6 week old on his tummy to sleep. Got to do what you got to do sometimes to get sleep!

I never thought I’d let my kids wear clothes covered in superheroes but that didn’t last long!

haha! I am claiming to not have superhero clothes until the time comes I am told I must get that superhero top. Although, there are a few frozen clothing items in my daughters wardrobe….

I thought I wouldn’t use a dummy until I had a colic baby. Thought I wouldn’t forumla fee until I had a child with severe allergies who requires prescription formula. Thought I wouldn’t let her watch tv or play with the ipad, ha. I also sound like my mum on occasions which is the most disturbing thing.

So many things. So many, many things. Number one for me is letting them watch TV in the mornings. I was certain that I would NEVER do that… ahem. x

Letting the 6 year old sometimes drink coke. Letting him watch TV before school and have his own iPod (since he was 4!). Lay in bed with him to get him to sleep. The list is long, I could go on and on but I won’t! -Aroha (for #teamIBOT)

Oh yes! We’re all judgey pre kids wearing our glamorous work wear and heels and then 2 years later, in our chuck taylors, bribing kids with chocolate, tv or ipad to get them to sleep through/get in the car/poo in the toilet…Parenting is like the show, Survivor for the modern woman!
