my favourite apps for kids

best apps for kids

If my little girl could be in front of the ipad all day long, she would. The difference with her is, she is not really interested in games per say, but rather the Peppa Pig re-runs and Bananas in Pyjamas. That girl could just watch and watch all day long, the same episode over and over again. I still have some fabulous games on my iphone though for those coffee lunches where the sound of Peppa Pig does not really transcend through the phone load enough. So, my favourite apps for kids are:

1. ABC iview : Of course I could’t not mention this one. Without ABC, there would be no Peppa Pig. I love how basically every program on ABC4 for kids is there. She knows exactly how to scroll and how to find the shows she wants.

2. Peekaboo Barn : This app has served me well over the years. First for the Little Miss, and now for the Little Man. Inside the little barn are friendly animals waiting to be seen. Just push the doors and the kids get a surprise as to what animal they will find. For $1.99 it is very very basic, but sometimes basic is just perfect.

3. Puzzles N Colouring : My little girl just loves colouring-in, so an app that can compliment this little love is a good thing. This is perfect. With colouring-in sheets and Puzzles. With a sea life theme across the app, there is something for any little imagination to choose from. The app is Free to download, but it only gives you 2 puzzles and 2 colouring sheets. For an extra $1.99 you get loads more puzzles and colouring sheets. For us, it was a well spent $1.99

4. Spot Goes to The Farm : As far as apps for kids go, this one is a little more expensive for $2.99. But for those fans of Spot, it is great. There are interactive stories and puzzles, making it a great combination for the most loving Spot fans.

5. Little Charley Bear : My Little Miss went through a whole Little Charley Bear phase, much like the current Peppa Pig phase, and this app was an absolute favourite. It is a match-n-play game asks children to select their favourite adventures and join Little Charley Bear in his amazing imaginary worlds; flying a plane, on safari, at the race track, and at the circus. And after each scene is completed, Little Charley Bear comes to life with an animated little movie. It is the perfect app and totally FREE! A must for even the non Little Charley Bear lovers.

6. Thomas & Friends Engine Activities : Another fabulous colouring, puzzle and match game. The free version on this one is actually quite good, giving you two different Thomas themes, ‘Pop Goes Thomas’ and ‘Creaky Cranky’ which include three puzzles, three colouring sheets and a match game on each. You can of course upgrade to get new games for $1.99 each, but I have not bothered with this one because the basic version has been enough. There are loads of other fabulous Thomas & Friends apps too, so be sure to check them out.

So there you go. My favourite apps for kids. I would love to hear from you. What are your kids favourite apps?

Agree on iview – we’re using it all the time. My boy loves the playschool app. You can make pictures and movies with it. Lots of fun!

Mine are bit older than yours so we have things like Subway surfer and Tomb raider rating highly. They also love the sudoko apps, hangman and some of the maths ones.

As much as I am trying to limit TV and iPad time for my son because I think he gets too much, our fave apps are the Peppa Pig Polly App and Playschool.

My Miss 7 is now a big user of iMovie, it cost $5.99 I think but is the best app that she has. WIth her friends and sister they get very creative and go making little movies all day.

I love all these – my 3 year old is now obsessed with You Tube and “put the star wars toys on Mummy” don’t know how I feel about that…..;) I really try to limit screen time to 2 hours total a day, but it is an uphill battle – particularly when I am wanting to get something done!!!

It is so hard Chantel. I have found that with no tv and no screens during the week we have less tantrums. I was getting so many tantrums and arguments over the damn thing that it had to stop. I just now get them on the weekends.

It is amazing how attached they get. x

I love one called Cowzat – it’s an interactive reading app designed by Cricket Australia. Also Rocket Maths is cute for older kids! :-)

Have you tried Monkey Preschool Lunchbox? Or Monkey maths (I think it’s called?) They are both about $3 I think but educational and my little girl loves them!
