I am grateful for: baking

cake baking

I am getting into baking mode. Baking cakes that is. Birthday cakes to be more exact.

Until recently I was afraid of baking. I really had no idea! No idea what to do, how to do it, what to mix. And then I just tried it! I just went for it! Now, obviously my first baking attempt was utter failure! But the next few after that were getting closer to edible pleasures.

And for months now I have been wanting to try baking with fondant…And I did it the other week. I just decided to bake! I had no reason in particular other then wanting  to try fondant and have a play.

Well, I have Little E’s birthday coming up so that was my excuse… to start practicing.

And that is what it was… practice. An experiment. A play. A trial run.

See that is the thing about baking… sometimes it is flop and sometimes it is not.

Sometimes we surprise ourselves. Sometimes we just have to try.

I was surprised! I surprised myself. It actually worked. I realised I don’t really like playing with icing because I get this horrid looking thing….

But The fondant…. now this I like! And I found it really easy!!! So I ordered a whole lot of rolled-out fondant from the states and today it arrived. So excited! My baking hat is on! My fondant hat is on! Little E’s birthday cake is going to be the talk of the party (only a little really).

Maybe I could try this….

Or maybe not…

You just have to give it a go! And even if it is a flop, or a little flop, it was baked with love.

My first attempt wasn’t so bad… I’m pretty impressed. It isn’t as fancy as this one above, but hey…

So this week I am grateful for baking love and baking with love… even with the disaster attempts and results included.

Grateful for making an attempt. Trying. Practicing. And being ok with the few disasters in between.

Good on you! You have done a great job. Using fondant is tough. I am only just beginning to become more confident with it. Would love one day to do something fab like that colourful cake. It looks awesome.

    Your cake is terrific – I can’t believe it’s a first attempt!

Fondant and I are not friends. I need to practice too! x

PS – You could SO do that colour cake. You’ve done all the shapes and the flowers in your cake already. You can do it!

What a fabulous, fabulous first attempt. I’ve never tried fondant because I’m a little scared.

I have a love/hate relationship with baking. Anything that needs to rise usually doesn’t so I regularly swear off baking cupcakes but yesterday I forgot my pact to never make them again and they turned out beautifully – my mum’s 30-odd year old recipe!
